Science is Open

2026

In 2026 I was commissioned by the KHP Centre for Translational Medicine to work on Science is Open, a public engagement project developed to open up the world of laboratory research to patients and members of the public. Participants had access to a number research laboratories and were supported to better understand how different types of samples are processed and how laboratory research contributes to improving health and healthcare.

As part of this project we visited laboratories across a range of healthcare areas - including cancer, cardiovascular health, child and maternal health, lung health and arthritis. In my role I supported participants to go beyond simply witnessing the processes, but aiding them in expressing their curiosity and astute observations through the making of their own photographs.

The resulting photographs offered a unique perspective on laboratory research - helping to tell the story of science through the eyes of the people it ultimately aims to benefit.

The project culminated in the ‘Science is Open – Lab Visits from a Public Perspective’ event, where attendees had the opportunity to view the photographs and hear reflections from those involved. The images sparked conversations about trust, transparency, and the often invisible work that underpins health research.
